About

The Urban Assembly School for Leadership and Empowerment is a small 6-12 school that prepares young female, transgender, and non-binary students for success in college and the world of work. We provide an academically rigorous curriculum that reflects the core set of knowledge and skills necessary for students to become culturally literate problem solvers, capable of becoming leaders in their local and global community. Embracing the theme of empowerment through social equity and activism, we develop our students into critical thinkers who rely on evidence, logic, and sound reasoning to formulate ideas and to support them. Our school, in collaboration with community stakeholders, supports students as they transition into adulthood in an environment which fosters the emotional, physical and intellectual growth necessary for post- secondary independence. Our students are part of a tight-knit, diverse community and they benefit greatly from our small size and unique personal attention. Every student is placed in an advisory that meets at least once a week. Affinity spaces are available for students who identify in various identity groups. Restorative Justice and Peer Mediation are a big part of our community values and norms and our staff’s professional learning focuses on anti-racism, social justice and equity in our classrooms + community.

Art
Urban Assembly School for Leadership and Empowerment is committed to enriching our students' education by providing arts instruction and opportunities for our 6-12 student body. In the 2023-24 school year, visual arts classes were once again held for both middle school and high school students. Students in 6th-8th grade received instruction in a sequential art curriculum building on skills they learned in the previous year. High school students were enrolled in Studio Art, while some upperclassmen were offered AP Art for the second time, after a very successful implementation of the course last year. The AP students worked incredibly hard on their culminating portfolios, and we are excited to continue and expand the program so that more students have the opportunity to enroll in the course. Tenth grade students continued to take drama classes for the full year. They studied playwriting and character development, with the spring semester devoted to Shakespeare and devising original work. Students took inspiration from news events and their own lived experiences and created new characters and stories to tell through performance. UASLE continued its newest tradition, the Arts & Culture Fest, and its popularity is only growing. Outside of school, our students were able to visit many exhibits, experiencing the arts at BAM, The Met, and The Brooklyn Museum. Students also saw performances at BAM, and attended Broadway shows, including Hamilton and Six.
