We offer an innovative form of education that empowers students to make responsible decisions. Our school is comprised of small learning communities. Our small learning communities allow teachers, school counselors and assistant principals to work with students for enrichment, remediation, and social engagement. Art
John Dewey High School has the following Arts Programs: visual arts, media arts, dance, and theater. Our theater program is actively using the Black Box Theater while our $10MM auditorium is being renovated and expected to open after a three year renovation in September. The new audio and light systems are better than what most Broadway theaters. We have several residency and partnership opportunities through Joyce Theater, Peridance, Broadway Bridges, Thrive Collective, Dancewave, Cooper Hewitt and Drexel. Dewey Dance Ensemble is on the rise and will continue to grow and become a destination for dancers throughout New York City. We began an innovative recruiting program to our school #DeweyOnTour where we bring Dewey to area middle schools where we tour area middle schools showcasing our talent in dance, visual/media arts, theater and music from our six themed academies. Our visual arts program is evident throughout our building, with murals are coming alive both indoors and out. We actively showcase art in-school gallery exhibitions. STEAM and industrial arts pathways is in focus as we are leaning in with design thinking, creating pathways and opportunities for students that encompass empathetic design for our local environment through our Minecraft Challenge, as well as our world renowned leadership in Battle of the Boroughs - designing a better NY.

The Academy of Fine and Performing Arts(K56T)
Performing Arts, Visual Art & Design

John Dewey High School now has a state of art, $10MM auditorium, Black Box Theater and multiple digital media labs where students will experience a unique journey in Visual, Theater, or Dance Arts with opportunity for industry certifications and internships. Students will be introduced to learning the basics of each field and advance by learning new techniques and skills in their focus area culminating in an Arts Endorsed Diploma. Theater Arts students will participate in acting, scene study, and play writing with an opportunity to attend weekly Broadway shows. Dance will include traditional and modern dance, jazz, interpretive dance, and choreography. Visual Arts classes include studio art, ceramics, and photography. Students have the opportunity to work towards acceptance into the National Arts Honor Society and there are two College Board Advanced Placement course opportunities in Visual Arts culminating in a professional portfolio that is defended and showcased for the entire school community. Additionally, students have the opportunity to get Adobe Creative Suite Certifications through Digital Art and Media classes. Students in the Performing Arts pathway have opportunities to participate in various internships, externships, extracurricular performances and induction into the National Dance Honor Society and National Honor Society.
