Art
The school arts programming at New Directions is targeted to help students develop their creative talents and to further their works and studies in specific media in which they have shown interest. Each arts class or opportunity is scalable for students: designed for the first-timer to explore and for the accomplished artist to flourish and branch out with their creative expression. We provide MANY forms of media through which students can develop talent. In music we partnered with Community Word Project for students to learn music production, lyric writing, and related art making; culminating in a multi-dimensional art learning and expression project. Students in music classes were immersed in learning music theory and applying that knowledge to learning recorder and keyboard from foundational practice to playing music with fluency. In a similar format we provide visiting artists to support student development with videography. Podcasting is an aspect of arts creativity that has become embedded into our English curriculum and is supported by outside arts vendor, Community Word Project. For visual arts we offer painting, drawing, sketching, pottery and pop-media arts classes across the school year. This year we participated in our first campuswide gallery showing. Various works of creativity and art were displayed in a wide variety of media in our campus auditorium, and was open to the public three afternoons a week.
