About

We serve recent immigrants who are both new to the United States and new learners of English. Teachers and students work in teams and teachers know their students well. Teams of teachers integrate interdisciplinary curriculum in which students work on projects that connect ideas from different classes. Both native language and English language development are supported across content areas. Students present graduation-level portfolio tasks as a requirement for graduation. Our program is designed to help immigrant students succeed in college and the world of work. We are part of the Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) pilot, which helps us support career readiness for all our students. We have courses that help our ninth and tenth graders explore their career interests and develop readiness skills. Our students can apply for apprenticeships in tech, finance, and business, which allows them to earn and learn while in high school.

Art
Arts are an integral part of our student's educational experience at Flushing International High School. All of our students take classes in visual arts, dance, media arts, and drama throughout their four years. We believe the arts synthesize all other content areas. The arts give students confidence, communication, and critical thinking skills, which prepare them for college and make them compassionate, collaborative, and active global citizens. Students have multiple opportunities to perform and share their work with members of the school community and community at large.

Project-Based Learning

Offers a supportive yet challenging learning environment for new arrivals. All of our teachers are language teachers so that students are developing their English while learning content in every class. The curriculum is project-based and interdisciplinary so that students learn to be problem-solvers and critical thinkers. Students are supported not only in their academic learning but also their social-emotional learning through our advisory program.
