About

Community School for Social Justice (CSSJ) is a NYC Outward Bound School. All NYC Outward Bound Schools prepare students for college, citizenship, and the 21st century workplace by bringing to life the central principle of Outward Bound: that combining intensive challenge with guided support leads to students achieving far more than they ever thought possible. Like all NYC Outward Bound schools, CSSJ implements the nationally recognized EL Education school model which is rooted in Outward Bound. This model features rigorous learning experiences and is built upon a culture of high achievement and mutual support. CSSJ uses hands-on learning that has real-world application to ignite a joy for learning and discovery in our students.

Our partnership with Manhattan Theater Club brings the program, Write on The Edge, to our 11th graders as a supplement to their English Language Arts class. Students write original one act plays inspired by the Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) production they have studied and attended. A teaching-artist co-plans with the classroom teacher to develop theater literacy and writing skills of the students, and then co-teaches a series of class lessons. During the development of the students' plays, the teaching-artist and two MTC actors visit the classes to provide feedback to the students. The Write on the Edge program provides a uniquely empowering opportunity for students to refine and revise their work and bring it to life. The project culminates in a performance of the students' work by the professional actor. Our Open Doors partnership exposes small groups of students to the theater world, with the opportunity to meet afterwards with Broadway show actors. As a group, students investigate what is meaningful, personal, and lasting about attending a live performance. In addition, students and mentors journey together through a season, inspiring one another, and learning about the world as it's reflected through the arts, and through each other.
