Art
University Neighborhood High School believes in exposing students to diverse forms of fine arts, media arts, dance, music, and theater. During the school day, every student takes at least one dance, music, and/or visual arts course each semester. Our visual arts program fosters students' creativity and addresses their social and emotional needs while encouraging thoughtful application of the formal and conceptual aspects of art and artmaking. Through collaboration on projects such as murals and art installations, our students develop artistic and interpersonal skills as they play an active role in beautifying our school and community. Our music program offers music history, theory, vocal and keyboarding to all students and infuses technology for learning music audio engineering. Students take dance classes as part of their regular coursework, study various forms of cultural dance and examine the techniques, history, influences, and aesthetics of each. In addition, students who are highly interested in dance can elect for advanced coursework. Both the music and dance programs share the goal of giving students performance opportunities. For 2024-2025, we wish to begin tracking students through sequential arts concentrations and maintain a collaborative community partnership with Abrons Arts Center/Henry Street Settlement.
