About

East-West is a small, inclusive 6-12 school guided by four pillars: Honor, Excellence, Curiosity, and Celebration. Students are expected to meet College Readiness Performance Standards on Regents exams, and to earn credit in Advanced Placement (AP) and College Now courses. Emphasis is placed on East Asian culture and every student completes a 3-4 year sequence of study in an East Asian language. Through our advisories and clubs, students flourish in a social setting that supports their needs. We are a College Bound Initiative school: Seniors and Juniors attend SAT- and college-prep classes, and parents receive individualized support throughout the college planning process. Our NEST program provides tailored support for students with autism.

Art
The arts department at the East-West School of International Studies includes dedicated, full-time visual arts and music teachers at both the middle school and high school levels. Students have the opportunity to experience foundations in studio art, digital art, and graphic design, foundations in music, chorus, musical theater, and beginning band/ukulele/guitar/keyboard. All visual arts classes engage in a variety of art techniques and have exposure to a diverse selection of contemporary artists through the use of hands-on projects and digital media. Students in all music classes experience music through the lens of a professional musician. They learn to read basic music notation and interpret markings in sheet music, develop their performance through different vocal and/or instrumental techniques, and explore the lives and music of musicians and composers (past and present) from many cultures and countries, and in all genres of the music industry. Students learn the fundamentals of playing and maintaining their respective instruments. The art department plans on expanding its offerings to students with a musical theater class open to both middle school and high school students in partnership with Inside Broadway, a Maker Space project in graphic design, and a continued partnership with The Justice Resource Center's High School Civics and The Arts program.
