CAAS is a small school school located in the heart of East Flatbush, NY. We envision the development of the whole child by partnering with all stakeholders to provide equal access to experiences in the arts and sciences that connect to the next stage or our students' lives. Our goal for College and Career readiness is evident in all the support we provide our students. We are part of the Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) pilot, which helps us support career readiness for all our students. We have courses that help our ninth and tenth graders explore their career interests and develop readiness skills. Our students can apply for apprenticeships in tech, finance, and business, which allows them to earn and learn while in high school.

Art
The Cultural academy for the Arts and Sciences (CAAS) offers students a visual arts program that has an art history component alongside hands-on- exposure to a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, and sculpture. Our students explore theater, spoken word, and culinary arts that is provided in school during the school day. We also have a partnership with an artist who teaches theater for interested students. Through our partnership with Hook arts Media, we have implemented a filmmaking program that ensures that all students have access to arts programming. The culinary program is in its eighth year and provides students with experiences anchored in the restaurant industry. Our culinary students hone their skills through internships, catering at a variety of school events, as well as running a lunch cafe. The recipient of a 21st Century Grant, CAAS has a full-service afterschool program, which is run by the Leadership Program, featuring dance, music production, and culinary arts. In addition to project-based learning in visual arts, cultural literacy is built into the school day. Students are exposed to theater and film production and participate in talent shows yearly. CAAS is a steadfast supporter of its in-service learning through our many partnerships. Throughout the school year our students visit a plethora of arts institutions to view presentations.

Culinary Arts

Students are taught by chefs who have several years of experience in the restaurant industry. They begin by studying Kitchen Safety & Sanitation and progress through Recipes, Weights and Measures; Flavor and Nutrition; Knife Skills, Vegetable and Meat Fabrication; Stocks, Broths, Soups and Sauces; Cooking Methods, Techniques and Terms; International Cuisines. Students also learn through, internships, catering events, running a lunch cafe, and field trips to produce markets and restaurants.
