About

ELHS offers English Language Learners a small, exceptionally supportive and academically rigorous environment for learning and growth. We are a safe, diverse, and interactive community with students from all parts of the world. Our high graduation rates and college enrollments are directly related to the community we create, the high qualtiy instruction we provide, and the accesibility of the instrution for all levels of English Language Learners. Students often enter speaking little to no English and over 90% or our graduates enter college. Art
Emma Lazarus High School is a transfer school that serves over-aged, and under-credited English as a New Language (ENL) students. Our student body is comprised of newcomers to the United States who are new to learning English. We offer stand-alone ENL courses through an English immersion model. Our students have limited time to learn English and pass the Regents. However, we ensure that students meet the city and state requirements for the arts and, when possible, expose them to additional arts and cultural opportunities throughout New York City. Students visit museums, attend Broadway shows, and visit other cultural institutions. We have long standing relationships with various arts organizations, such as Arts Connection, Lincoln Center's Theater LEAD program, the New York City Horticultural Society, and NexGen Youth Theatre. We believe that students learn best through experiential and project-based instruction and offer visual arts to every entering student. We spiral additional arts opportunities through both integrated and stand-alone courses. Moreover, we believe that arts integration is an effective method for students to learn and acquire a new language. Additionally, we believe the arts bolster lifelong learning and critical thinking skills that students will take with them when they graduate. Lastly, we believe in 'art for art's sake' and therefore, we provide our students with meaningful exposure to the arts across the entire school.
