Susan E. Wagner High School consists of unique small learning communities referred to as Learning Centers, and is the Chancellor's Arts Designated School for Staten Island. Each Learning Center has an assigned assistant principal, teacher coordinator, guidance counselor, dean, and attendance assistant, all of whom work together to provide a nurturing environment and a wide range of academic support services. In addition to our academic programs, our many extracurricular and co-curricular activities help to develop well-rounded, socially conscious, respectful citizens who are prepared to enter college and the work force.

Art
The Susan E. Wagner High School Arts program has a wide array of courses and specialized teachers within each discipline. We have been selected by the NYC Dept. of Ed. as the Arts Designated High School for Staten Island. This designation allows us to offer a Regents Endorsed diploma in the Arts as well as opportunities for all disciplines to work side by side with top professional artists in their field. Our Arts in residence partnerships include: The NY Pops, Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Center, Broadway Bound, Illuminarts, Alvin Ailey and ABT dance schools. The music program has performed to critical acclaim throughout New York City and the country at various festivals and public venues. We were finalists at "Essentially Ellington" in 2023 and 2024. Music courses include multi-leveled ensembles in chorus, band, and guitar, as well as composition. The Theatrical Arts Institute is a four-year program, which includes courses in acting, directing, stage design, musical theatre, and playwriting. In addition to class work, students are engaged in a number of full-scale productions each year including musicals and dramatic plays. The visual arts program has opportunities for students to study art through a variety of media including painting, drawing, graphic design, and photography. Students regularly contribute artwork to galleries and national competitions each year. The dance program offers multi-leveled courses in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Modern. Dance students participate in staged performances beginning in their Freshman year

As the specially selected "Chancellor's Arts Designated High School" for Staten Island, visual arts students are eligible to receive a special Chancellor's Endorsed Arts Diploma. The Visual Arts program encourages students to reach their potential through the creation of original work. The following courses are offered within the Visual Arts sequence: Painting, Portfolio, Advanced Drawing, Beginning Drawing, Graphic Design, Digital Photography, Basic Art, and Art History.
