About

The High School for Service Learning is a small school that prioritizes a tailored approach to education, promoting our students’ personal, professional, and academic growth. We empower students to be both college and career ready well-equipped to enter the workforce or pursue higher education, with a strong foundation of practical experience and academic achievement. Students have the unique opportunity to earn over a year's worth of college credits while still in high school through our partnerships with Brooklyn College, Medgar Evers College and Syracuse University. To prepare students for the workforce, our school is a FutureReady NYC and CareerReady Modern Youth Apprenticeship school offering job readiness training in Business, Finance, Technology and Healthcare. For students who express interest in other careers, we provide external resources in these fields as well. Through these programs students acquire 21st century employability skills including financial literacy, earn paid work-based learning opportunities, and engage in 1-1 advising allowing students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios. We are part of the Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) pilot, which helps us support career readiness for all our students. We have courses that help our ninth and tenth graders explore their career interests and develop readiness skills. Our students can apply for apprenticeships in tech, finance, and business, which allows them to earn and learn while in high school.

Art
At the High School for Service and Learning, arts education through visual arts and theater plays a pivotal role in realizing our mission. Visual arts cultivates critical thinking by encouraging students to analyze, interpret, and innovate through creative expression. Whether studying art history or creating their own works, students learn to appreciate diverse perspectives and develop their unique voice, essential for success in a global society. Similarly, theater fosters collaboration as students work together in production teams, learning to communicate effectively, delegate responsibilities, and resolve conflicts constructively. These experiences build empathy and understanding, crucial for navigating diverse post-secondary environments and professional settings.
