The Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction prepares students for college and beyond with an emphasis on architecture, engineering, art, and design. At the end of the 9th grade, students choose the focus for their electives in order to develop an art portfolio and receive an advance art endorsement or a design portfolio and work toward an Autocad certification when they graduate. Additionally, students engage in internships, job shadowing, and mentorship in their specific fields of interest through our corporate and non-profit partnerships. At SDC, we are also involved with the AP for All curriculum and have AP courses in all major subject areas. The goal at SDC is that every student is supported through an innovative and rigorous educational experience.

Students in the architecture and engineering pathway at SDC will graduate being able to read, create and dimension technical sketches, read site plans and architectural drawings, utilize industry terminology and technology appropriately. Students will be able to analyze structures and determine the effects of structural stresses. They will also develop their abilities to document, render and present materials that can be easily understood by any person who is familiar with the standards and procedures of the engineering and architecture professions within a portfolio format. Students will be proficient in industry based software AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SketchUp and Revit. Students use 3D printers, CNC Routers and Laser Cutters to fabricate their own designs. Students in the Fine Arts Pathway go on to learn painting, sculpture, ceramics and digital illustration. Our school maintains an active design studio, a painting studio, a sculpture facility with ceramic kiln, and a fabrication lab with 3-D printers, a CNC router, and a laser cutter. We also received a grant to build a fiber arts studio with sewing machines, weaving looms and sewing supplies. A s part of their chosen pathway, students will also participate in a variety of career discovery activities throughout the year. These include job site visits, guest speakers, and after school internships. Twice a year, students in both pathways present their work to a panel of arts professionals & contractors.
